How to Channel the Gifts of the Full Moon (+ Five-Minute Qi Gong Practice)
Have you ever noticed that you feel different when the moon is full? Perhaps you have a slightly shifted perspective, or you just feel that “something is in the air.” If that resonates with you, you’re not alone.
In Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong, the moon’s monthly cycle corresponds to different energetic shifts in the natural world. The Supermoon is especially important as it reflects a delicate balance between Yin and Yang energy.
In this blog, we’ll discuss how you can harness the energetic gifts the Supermoon offers. We’ll also share a brief Qi Gong exercise designed to help you channel these gifts in your own life.
What Qualities Does The Supermoon Embody?
The moon is generally Yin in nature compared to other elements in the natural world. This is especially true when you compare the moon to the sun, which lies on the extreme side of Yang. In fact, the sun is the most Yang entity in our entire solar system.
Throughout the course of a normal month, the moon’s energy shifts between different balances of Yin and Yang. During the darkest nights of the new moon, the moon exudes a state of Yin energy. Yin is associated with stillness, receptivity, and intuition, to name just a few.
When the moon is full, its entire earth-facing surface reflects light from the sun. Since sunlight is a clear manifestation of Yang, it balances the moon’s Yin energy. Therefore, when the moon is at its brightest, it embodies a lot of both Yin and Yang energy. Together, Yin and Yang energy create power and balance.
Although this balance between Yin and Yang occurs every month, it is especially prominent during the Supermoon. For humans, there are a few important qualities that this unique Yin/Yang balance offers.
Increased Emotional Sensitivity
The powerful energy from the Supermoon can lead to increased emotional sensitivity for many people. It can be normal to feel more emotional than usual during a Supermoon.
This emotional sensitivity can apply in both “directions.” You may feel elevated and joyful, or encounter difficult feelings that seem to arise out of nowhere. Regardless of what feelings come up for you, it’s best to hold space for them and face what arises. For this reason, it can be helpful to dedicate a little extra time to meditation and Qi Gong to help you process your internal experiences.
Just as the Supermoon’s energy can increase emotional sensitivity, it can also heighten your intuition.
Intuition is a wonderful quality that can help you perceive the more subtle energies around you. This can help deepen your understanding of yourself and navigate any life decisions you may be facing. When the moon is full, don’t be surprised if you have a keener sense of what is right for you to pursue.
A Time to Bring Your Shadows into the Light
The qualities of heightened emotional sensitivity and intuition combine to create wonderful opportunities. Just as the Supermoon illuminates the world, it can help you bring your inner shadows into the light.
The Supermoon invites you to examine the often overlooked parts of yourself. Pent-up emotions, old traumas, and unrealized longings can all come to light during the month’s brightest evenings. Therefore, during the Supermoon, take some time to explore any inner shadows that want to be recognized. Of course, it’s important to do this process skillfully. Meditation and Qi Gong are wonderful tools for helping you face whatever unseen energies move within you.
We’ve included a five-minute Qi Gong exercise below to help you harness the potent energy that the Supermoon offers so you can experience more emotional awareness and a keener intuition.
Five-Minute Moon Over The Lake Qi Gong Exercise
Start with your feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart, and bend your knees slightly. Bring your hands in front of your body with your palms facing the earth.
Begin to move your weight slowly onto your right foot and move your hands to that side of your body. When your weight is almost fully on your right foot, move your hands up slowly and then start to shift your weight slowly to your left. Let your hands move to the left in a big circle as your weight moves left.
Once your weight is all the way over to the left, bright your hands down slowly and then move them back to your right.
Your hands should be making large, slow circles in front of you, and the weight of your body should move in synchronicity with your hands. When your hands move to the right, so should your body. When they circle to the left, your weight should, too. Imagine that your hands are moonbeams shining down on a lake in front of you.
After two to three minutes, rotate your hands in the other direction, doing the same movement except in reverse. As you do this exercise, breathe slowly and feel your body enter a state of deep relaxation. With relaxation, you can relate to your emotions with greater clarity and experience your intuitive potential.
When you’re ready, bring your hands back to your midline and take a few deep breaths. Take that feeling of relaxation and energy with you into the rest of your day.
