How to Get “Unstuck” in Your Wellness Practice

Have you ever established a wellness practice, only to have it quickly fall by the wayside?

Perhaps, life got “too busy,” and you found it hard to find time to practice. Or, maybe the exercises felt too strenuous or difficult, so you lost the motivation. And then there’s loneliness, which a lot of people experience when they’re doing something all by themselves.

It can feel frustrating to get “stuck” in your wellness practice, but fortunately, there’s a way to get unstuck. At Holden QiGong, we’ve looked at all of the different elements that help students overcome the roadblocks that get in the way of a consistent wellness practice (whether it’s Qi Gong, yoga, meditation, or anything else).

In this blog, we share several key steps you can take to reignite your practice if you feel stuck. Taking care of yourself will always require a bit of discipline, but these tips can go a long way to helping you get back on track with your personal wellness routine.

Establish A Wellness Practice Schedule

It’s one thing to decide that you’re going to practice Qi Gong or meditate, but it’s another to know when you’re going to practice. Without a clear schedule, it’s difficult to stay consistent.

One of the most powerful ways to make sure you get to your practice is to put it in your calendar. Decide how often you want to practice, how long you want to practice, and then write it down. For example, perhaps you want to practice four days per week for 30 minutes. This is just one possible schedule, so take a few minutes to think about the frequency and duration that feels the best to you.

When you write it in your schedule, try to indicate exactly what time of day you’re going to practice. A lot of people choose to practice as soon as they wake up in the morning to set a solid foundation for the day. However, others prefer to practice in the afternoon or evening. It’s completely up to you. The important thing is to make a clear decision about when you’re going to practice.

Once you put your practice schedule in your calendar, make it a high priority. Unless a true emergency arises, put off all other tasks when it’s time to practice. Sometimes, that might mean letting others know that you’re not available during that time. At first, it might feel strange to put your own personal needs as such a high priority, but after a while you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing it for the last ten years.

Cultivate Community

If you’re trying to cultivate a routine all by yourself, it can be difficult to stay focused and motivated. After all, humans are social creatures and thrive in community environments.

When you’re part of a group with a shared vision it’s significantly easier to feel inspired, helping you get recommitted. If you’re going through a tough time, you can allow others’ energy to help you stay dedicated to your practice. Not to mention, the joy you cultivate through your practice will be mirrored and magnified through the synergy you’ll experience with others.

In the twenty-first century, you don’t even need to leave your home to experience community. One of the benefits of technology is that it empowers you to connect with like-minded individuals all around the world. During Lee’s Qi Gong classes and workshops, for example, we see people from Europe, Australia, the Americas, and other countries all practicing together with shared intentions. Even though everyone is spread out around the world, the connections and community runs deep.

Create Your Own Wellness Space At Home

In one of our previous blogs, we explored the numerous benefits of creating a personal practice space at home. One of these benefits is that your practice grows stronger when you consistently practice in the same space, making it easier to get (and stay) unstuck in your wellness routine.

Practicing in the same environment allows your energy to culminate there. Over time, you start to feel drawn to your practice space. This helps you further establish the positive habit of practicing on a consistent basis.

There are many ways to create a personal wellness space. If you have an extra room or outdoor area, you can choose to dedicate it to your practice. Lee suggests integrating aspects of the Five Elements, such as a fountain, plant, and candle. However, if that doesn’t feel feasible to you, it’s perfectly fine to practice consistently in whatever space you have.
